Wang, Guangqian

Professor
Tsinghua University

Dr. Guangqian Wang is a professor and general director of the State Key Laboratory of Hydroscience and Engineering, Tsinghua University in China. He was a winner of the National Outstanding Younger Fund Award in 1995 and got financial supports from the Strategic Research Fund of National Natural Science Foundation in 2002. Currently, he is the chief scientist of the National Basic Research Program of China. He is a vice director of Landslide and Debris Flow Committee of the Chinese Society of Water and Soil Conservation, and a vice director of the Sediment Committee of Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society. Professor Wang’s main research achievements include: (1) developing a kinetic model and obtaining corresponding theoretical solution for solid-liquid two-phase flows with low sediment concentrations. The developed kinetic model was used to successfully explain the phenomenon that the maximum sediment concentration does not located at the bottom of water for the type I distribution and to overcome the shortcomings that the calculated sediment concentration was zero at water surface and that it was infinite at bottom from the Rouse formula. With the achievements, Prof. Wang was awarded the Ning Chien Memorial Prize in 1992; (2) developing of a kinetic model for solid-liquid two-phase flows with high sediment concentrations based on revised BGK collision operators, and establishing constitutive relations of particles movements. With the achievement Prof. Wang received the excellent paper award by the World Association for Sedimentation and Erosion Research in 2007; (3) developing the granular flow model for debris flow and establishing the constitutive relations of granular mass flows as well as determining the volumetric concentration threshold for judging relative importance between granular fluctuating stress and collision stress. The results were used as the criterion for judging significance of granular collision effect; (4) developing a digital watershed model through integrating multiple hydrologic, hydrodynamic and sedimentation dynamic processes. Sedimentation and erosion modeling methodologies for river basins were initiated; (5) Applications of the developed methodologies and models to many momentous projects, such as construction of the Three Gorges Project, operation of the Sanmenxia Reservoir in the Yellow River Basin, water resources regulation in the Yellow River Basin, have resulted in significant contributions. Professor Wang has been awarded several national-level prizes for his achievements in science and engineering fields. He has published more than 150 journal papers and 4 books in areas of river mechanics, digital watershed modeling and water resource information system.
