Dear CARES members & friends,

CARES is pleased to announce an upcoming seminar on May 18, 2010 (Tuesday) featuring one of the subtopics of Green Transportation: High Speed Rail (HSR).

Two talks will be presented, first an overview of High Speed Rail technologies including current high speed rail in Japan, China, France, and Germany given by Dr. William Kao. The other talk will focus on High Speed Rail plans for California presented by Dr. Lester H. Lee.

Please join us and learn more about this fascinating and relevant topic.  The seminar will also provide an environment for proactive dialogue on this subject and an opportunity to exchange views among participants and a chance of networking.  See you there!!

Best Regards

"California High Speed Rail" Dr. Lester H. Lee  (李心培博士)
Talk Abstract:
California High Speed Rail is a major infrastructure project for improving passenger rail travel within the State of California. Its current plan calls for a budget of $45 billion with only a quarter of this amount secured. Rest of the funding is still up on the air. People are wondering if this project will ever get off the ground.

With over $200 million already spent over the past 15 years for design and planning, but not much to show for progress, it is about time that we should look into why our State and this country is falling way behind China and other developed countries on the race for high speed rail.

Perhaps we need to look at this project more from the business angle and narrow down the focus to a more sensible and profitable model. Hopefully our gathering will motivate some constructive discussions and identify areas where we can make some positive inputs.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Lester H. Lee
Dr. Lester H. Lee is one of the old timers in Silicon Valley.  He came to America 50 years ago after finishing high school in China.  He is a graduate of Univ. of Illinois and settled in Silicon Valley after getting his Ph. D. from Stanford.
