Wells, Charles H.
Platform Architect
OSIsoft, Inc.
Dr. Wells assists OSIsoft customers maximize value from their software, and he designs and develops new features and functions in OSIsoft products. With over 30 years experience in real-time control and monitoring, he has published over 50 technical papers, been awarded eight US Patents, and co-authored two textbooks.
Dr. Wells originated large scale distributed generation applications with Detroit Edison using the Distribution Engineering Software package developed at EPRI, designed building Demand Response systems for the California Energy Commission, designed Phasor applications for the Entergy transmission system, and defined compliance monitoring systems with the California ISO. He developed and patented new technology for detecting power grid stability in real time and systems for improving the efficiency of pulverized coal fired boilers. He developed carbon emission reduction programs using United Nations approved methods and recently received a US Patent for improved fossil fuel combustion. He applied innovative OSIsoft technology to transformer monitoring and large scale traffic problem forecasting.
Previously, he managed the development of EPRI software quality guidelines and commercialization standards. He introduced an automated software quality metric used by developers to write maintainable code. He directed research in Transmission and Distribution and was a key contributor to the development of the Distribution Engineering Workstation (DEW). At Measurex, he developed and implemented control systems for fossil fired generators in the power industry and in pulp and paper manufacturing. At Envirotech, he developed controls for activated sludge, anaerobic digesters, etc., that significantly reduced power use within stringent EPA water quality regulations. At Systems Control, Dr. Wells helped develop the first power system state estimator. He also designed and developed the first real time air quality monitoring system required by the 1970 Clean Air Act.
Dr. Wells received his BS in Chemical Engineering at Vanderbilt University; an MS in Chemical Engineering, majoring in Polymer science, and a PhD in Electrical Engineering at Washington University.
